On Thursday afternoon, the new Express Care & Tick Clinic was open for appointments. It’s one of many responses from health organizations to increased hospital visits and a rising number of positive tests for tick-borne conditions, like the allergy to mammalian products called alpha-gal syndrome.

The new center, located at Wing 1 (Entrance 4) of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, is specifically meant for people who need quick access if bitten by the small arachnids that loom on beach grass and hiking trails. Virtual appointments are also available. Cases for tick-borne conditions are rising across the Island, and with it, anxiety and fear from year-rounders and seasonal tourists alike.

“From the hospital’s perspective, we are seeing a notable increase this season in patients seeking care for tick-related concerns compared to prior years. While we are still compiling and validating the full data set, early trends suggest heightened community awareness and vigilance, which is leading more individuals to seek evaluation,” said Claire Seguin, president and hospital COO, in a statement to The Times.

The new clinic at the hospital was launched on June 15, and offers often same day care for tick-related concerns. With a rise in patients concerned about ticks, the hospital’s new program is just one established on the Island in recent months. Island Health Care added a new integrated health clinic and has plans to expand further. Plus, organizations have been started or changed hands, like Tick Free MV and Martha’s Vineyard Medical.

The Express Care & Tick Clinic is also a part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts outlined in its 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment, a report that was published in November that highlighted tick-borne conditions as a top public health concern.

The clinic is designed for patients with or without primary care providers through the hospital. It’s staffed by one to two nurse practitioners, and is supported by medical assistants and nurses. Appointments need to be scheduled, and are billed in a similar way as a primary care appointment.

“The launch of our Express Care & Tick Clinic reflects what we hear every day from residents and visitors: that access to timely, high-quality and convenient care matters. These services are designed for minor illnesses, injuries, and tick-related concerns without the need for an Emergency Department visit. We are proud to expand how we serve Martha’s Vineyard and to be here for our community when it matters most,” Seguin said.

To book an appointment at the Express Care & Tick Clinic, go to the Massachusetts General Brigham Patient Gateway portal or call the Patient Access Center at (508)-684-4500. The clinic hours are Monday, 8 am to 4 pm; Tuesday through Thursday, 8 am to 5:30 pm; and Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.
