On Thursday, July 16, at 7:30 pm, M.V. Sexual Wellness is partnering with Reproductive Equity Now to present “The Turnaway Play,” which was developed in collaboration with the Turnaway Project. The play depicts real stories of patients who have been denied abortion care. The performance features actress Amy Brenneman and Island Theatre Workshop’s local actors. There will be a brief panel discussion following the production.
“We’re excited to bring “The Turnaway Play” to the Island,” said M.V. Sexual Wellness board president Terre Young. “It’s so important for all of us to understand what happens when people are denied basic healthcare services, specifically abortions.”
“Telling honest and authentic stories is crucial so that we understand how we are all connected to this vital issue,” explains Amy Brenneman. A longtime summer resident, Brenneman will play the lead narrator’s role, one of the parts inspired by the revelatory 10-year scientific research led by UCSF professor and MacArthur fellow Dr. Diana Greene Foster.
“As Reproductive Equity Now works diligently to defend and expand access to abortion care in Massachusetts, we are proud to continue our fight for protections for abortion care throughout pregnancy to ensure no one is denied abortion care due to arbitrary restrictions,” said Justine Hand, director of development for Reproductive Equity Now.
People can purchase tickets at mvswell.org/event-tickets-1. This event is a collaborative fundraiser, with proceeds from sponsorships going to support M.V. Sexual Wellness and Reproductive Equity Now Foundation, and one-third of ticket sales to Island Theatre Workshop.
All three organizations are 501(c)(3) nonprofits. After payment of any event-related expenses, and ticket share agreement, the remaining funds will be distributed on a 50/50 basis to support MVSwell and REN’s charitable missions and programs.
