An 84-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle as she was crossing a crosswalk in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday.
The accident occurred at 9:02 am. Oak Bluffs Chief of Police Jonathan Searle said the woman had visible injuries on her hands, knees, and face, “but she was alert.”
Oak Bluffs Police and EMS responded to the scene, and the woman was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, a 71-year-old man, was making a left turn onto Kennebec Avenue from Lake Avenue when he struck the woman, Searle said.
Oak Bluffs Police said it is suspected that the driver was traveling at an excessive rate of speed, and the woman could have been in his blind spot when he made the turn.
“Those two things combined resulted in him not seeing her,” Searle said.
Chief Searle said a criminal summons for the driver was issued for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a crosswalk violation.
The Oak Bluffs Police Station is up the street from where the accident occurred, and the response was quick, Searle said. Four Oak Bluffs officers were on scene, as well as Oak Bluffs EMS.
“We [Oak Bluffs Police] are going to urge everybody to take a few extra seconds and check blind spots,” Searle said. “It’s that time of year; trying to hurry will result in accidents like these.”
The identities of the woman and the driver have not been released.
I can’t see how someone can take a left hand turn, off Lake Ave. and go up Kennabec Ave , the wrong way.
They turned left around the Flying Horses
Giordano’s occupies the block between Circuit and Kennebec Aves. Lake Ave runs to the bus stop at Seaview Ave. Turn left at the pizza end of Gino’s, Kennebec runs to Oak Bluffs Ave
I’m thinking it means the little stretch of road between the Flying Horses and the Police station?
