We believe strongly in public access to reliable information, and we are equally committed to building a sustainable future for the local journalism our Island depends on. We hope you have seen the improvements we’ve made to our website, as well as how we’ve stepped up coverage of news, events, and the arts. However, there’s a cost to producing consistent, high quality coverage across the Island — so we’re asking for your help.
Starting today, we are reintroducing gated access to our website content. Although this is a significant change, we believe it is still generous. The new system strikes a balance between ensuring free access to breaking news that serves our community while also building the necessary infrastructure to sustain The Times for many more years.
Here’s how it works:
- If you are already a paid member, you are all set, and nothing changes.
- Readers who are not paying members of The Times will have access to three free online articles a month, and at that point, we ask you to sign up for The Minute newsletter, which is free and includes summaries of every story.
- By joining our free newsletter “The Minute,” readers will be registered in our system and gain access to 10 more free articles a month
- By becoming a paying member, readers will get unlimited access to all our digital content. Readers can sign up to become a member of The Times for just $1 a week.
Although we truly want every reader to have access to all of our content all the time, the truth is that there is a crisis in local journalism. Every week, two local newspapers go out of business across the country.
