On Wednesday July 29 at 7:30 pm, a feature-length documentary, “Behind the Lines,” will be one of the films screened as part of the MV Film Society’s DOC WEEK.
The film follows the New York Times best-selling author, Andrew Carroll, on his international mission to seek out and preserve war correspondences related to American conflicts ever written, from the Revolution to the present day. Carroll launched the initiative almost 28 years ago and has found and archived more than 250,000 letters and emails.
“This film,” Carroll says, “is not only inspired by my book Behind the Lines, but by a play that has toured the country–including to Martha’s Vineyard–and one thing I’ve noticed after almost every performance is that people come up to me and say, ‘I really wish I knew about this ahead of time and that the mission continues, because have war letters I could have brought to donate to you.'”
Audience members are encouraged to bring any war letters or emails to the event, if they are willing to donate them, and give them directly to Carroll. Carroll and the film’s director, John Benitz, will also do a brief “talk back” after the screening to discuss the film with audience members.
