To the Editor:
As Islanders look ahead to the upcoming district attorney elections, I urge voters to take a hard look at whether Robert Galibois has earned another term. His public record includes serious concerns that go beyond politics and speak directly to judgment, transparency, and office management.
As a Vineyard resident, I think it is important to remember that Galibois represented the only publicly charged defendant in the tragic 2019 shooting death of Eric Voshell. Whatever one thinks of the defense work itself, the only prosecution in that case did not result in a conviction.
More recently, Galibois was ordered to pay a $5,000 ethics fine after the State Ethics Commission found that he violated conflict-of-interest law in connection with a motor vehicle incident in Hyannis. According to police reports, Galibois made an illegal U-turn in a state-owned vehicle, struck another motorist, and had to be chased down to acknowledge the crash. He was cited by Barnstable Police for failing to report the crash, along with other traffic violations. He was found to have used office resources improperly by having a prosecutor draft a favorable press release related to the matter.
Finally, the state auditor’s report raised other serious concerns about how Galibois runs his office. The report found deficiencies in sexual assault kit tracking, employee settlement procedures, and cybersecurity training.
District attorneys play a crucial role in upholding the laws that hold our society together. I ask voters whether this is the kind of leadership we can trust with that responsibility.
I hope readers will support new leadership for district attorney in the Sept. 1 primary and the Nov. 3 state election.
