The African American Heritage Trail will honor on Pequot Ave. the sorority legacy of pioneering, philanthropic women and their rich contributions to the Island. This space will acknowledge the strong bonds of sisterhood formed on the Vineyard, and provide a deeper understanding of the diverse and rich history of African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard.
The contributions of Deltas on the Vineyard have been significant. In addition to year-round public service activities, this group has contributed to the following organizations and projects over the past 24 years: The Oak Bluffs library, the Cottagers, Inc. Building Fund, the Food Pantry, the African American Heritage Trail, Union Chapel Pew-Naming Capital Campaign Project, Niantic Park bench and playground projects, NAACP, the Red Stocking Fund, Keep Democracy Alive Alliance — Get Out the Vote campaign, and the Mariposa Museum.
The unveiling of the plaque will take place on August 18, at 1 pm; 35 Pequot Ave., Oak Bluffs.
