With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carol Shilakes, age 84, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Edgartown. Carol passed away on August 16, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Michigan, Carol devoted her professional life to education, serving as both a teacher and a principal. Through her kindness, dedication, and genuine care, she touched the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues. Her impact will not be forgotten.
In her later years, Carol filled her days with the activities and people she loved most. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing pickleball, mahjong, and golf, participating in Bible study groups and book clubs, and engaging in many other pursuits that brought her joy and kept her surrounded by wonderful people.
Throughout her battle with cancer, Carol’s unwavering faith, strength, and positivity inspired everyone around her. She found support and connection through cancer support groups, and faced each day with grace and courage, setting an extraordinary example for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Carol is survived by her children, Jessica Reilly and her husband Ray, and Christopher Shilakes and his wife Kirsten; her grandchildren, Christian, Jocelyn, Isabelle, Keegan, and Hayden; and her siblings, Frank Hebda, Robert Hebda, and Linda Hammerschmidt. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Shilakes, with whom she shared nearly 61 years of marriage.
A memorial Mass will be held for both Carol and Ron at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Edgartown, on August 28 at 10 am.
