The Oak Bluffs Fireworks, scheduled to take place Friday, are canceled due to choppy waters and inclement weather conditions expected Friday and Saturday.
The fireworks have officially been pushed off until the summer of 2027.
“Due to rough seas, unfavorable weather conditions, and concerns regarding the safe loading and operation of the fireworks barge, both Friday fireworks display and the scheduled Saturday rain date have been canceled,” Wendy Brough, Oak Bluffs town administrator, wrote in an email to The Times.
Brough said the decision was made in consultation with the fireworks contractor and public safety personnel.
“While we recognize the disappointment this causes, the safety of the crew, responders, residents, and visitors must come first,” Brough wrote in the email. “We look forward to celebrating with you again in 2027!”
The Steamship Authority (SSA) originally diverted several late-night trips to Vineyard Haven for the fireworks. All of the tips will now run to and from Oak Bluffs on a trip-by-trip basis, the Steamship Authority said in a social media post Friday morning. Diversions, however, are likely, the post added, due to “rough seas and unfavorable weather conditions.
