The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, founded in 1986, collects a two percent real estate transfer fee to buyers in all six towns at closing. The money is used to purchase land in order to preserve and conserve it for public access. In the last four decades, 7 percent, or 4,300 acres, of the land area on the Island has been conserved.
