Smoke seen from Falmouth as a result of the car fire in Tisbury. —George Brennan

A plume of smoke was spotted from Falmouth above the Island in the Vineyard Haven area last Saturday.

Tisbury Fire Department Chief Patrick Rolston said the smoke cloud seen from the Cape was the result of a car fire in the area of State Road.

The vehicle, which was stationary in a parking area, was fully engulfed when Tisbury firefighters arrived at the scene.

“Crews worked quickly and extinguished the fire,” Rolston said in a message to The Times.

Rolston said the cause of the fire is still undetermined because of the extent of the damage it caused. Rolston added that the fire spread to a fence next to the vehicle, but firefighters knocked it down before there was any extension past the fence.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
