Martha’s Vineyard

By Evangeline Segura

Salty air

Sweet and kind.

It makes you feel like you.

The green, pink, and yellow plants

In Vineyard Haven make a small rainbow.

The air in Menemsha is fresh like their

Pastries, while Oak Bluffs is busting

With people in the summer, it’s quiet

In the wintry months.

In West Tisbury, you’ll find farms and

Farm people; you’ll also find

Me. I’m with my animals,

The horse and goat.

Besides me and the farms,

Lambert’s Cove is like

A little treasure.

Edgartown has the Chappaquiddick

Ferry to the island. It’s known

For a seafood restaurant and Great Pond.

Chilmark has the Gay Head Lighthouse and the

Aquinnah Cliffs that are like red clouds.
Along with their chocolate factory that I loved.

Evangeline Segura is 11 years old and lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. She has been visiting Martha’s Vineyard since she was 3 months old, and considers the Island her second home. She loves everything about it. (Editor’s note: This is how she sees and feels about the Vineyard.)

Poets with a connection to Martha’s Vineyard are encouraged to submit poems of 120 words or fewer to Michael West at m@mwest.com. Please also include a two- to three-sentence bio at the end of your poem.
