To the Editor:

At an awards banquet on Oct. 23 in Marlborough, celebrating excellence in science education, Karl Nelson received the County Award from the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers in recognition of his remarkable career teaching science at the West Tisbury School.

In his 32 years of service, Karl Nelson’s students maintained a record of high performance in MCAS scores in eight- grade science, and in 2010 and 2011 — two consecutive years — his students ranked the highest in the state.

Karl Nelson recently retired from teaching math and science, but his methods of teaching hands-on science are fondly remembered by generations of students.
