Martha’s Vineyard Community Seed Library events return to the West Tisbury library this November, offering free monthly opportunities to sort, save, and exchange seeds ahead of the next growing season. Events run Saturdays through May 2027, beginning Nov. 14 with Seed Sorting and Tea. Highlights include:
- Saturday, Nov. 14, 12-2 pm: Seed Sorting and Tea. Come chat, sip some tea, and process seeds for the next growing season. All are welcome to bring plant material to save seeds from or help process what we have. Seed envelopes and labels will be provided. Local seed-saving experts will be on hand to answer questions.
- Saturday, Dec. 12, 12-2 pm: Seed Sorting and Tea
- Saturday, Jan. 16, 12-2 pm: Seed Sorting and Tea
- Saturday, Feb. 13, 12-2 pm: Annual Seed Swap! Plus Sorting and Tea. Bring your saved open-pollinated/heirloom seeds to share, swap, and help restock the Seed Library cabinet! From 12 to 12:30 pm, join our seed circle to chat about the seeds you brought or the plants you’re excited to grow. From 12:30 to 2 pm, drop in anytime for seed sorting and germination testing, and learn about the benefits of creating and using leaf mold.
- Saturday, March 13, 12-2 pm: Seed Sorting and Tea
- Saturday, April 10, 12-2 pm: Seed Sorting and Tea
- Saturday, May 22, 10 am-12 pm: Seedling Swap. Bring heirloom and open-pollinated vegetable, flower, and fruit seedlings or cuttings to swap and share. Come talk to local gardeners and seed-saving experts, and help us grow and develop locally adapted varieties for our seed cabinet. Please remember to save your seeds after the growing season and “return” them to the seed library.
All events are free and open to the public. The Seed Library is a collaboration between Island Grown Initiative, the West Tisbury library, Whippoorwill Farm, and local home gardeners. For more information, email wt_mail@clamsnet.org, or visit the West Tisbury library website.
