The annual Della Hardman Day will return to Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, July 25, at 4 pm. This year’s theme, “Our Stories, Our Legacy,” honors the enduring power of storytelling.
The 2026 program will feature keynote remarks from Mara Brock Akil, the acclaimed creator of “Girlfriends” and the hit Netflix series “Forever,” whose work has defined a generation of storytelling in American media. Her debut novel, “The Revelation of Dionne Daphne,” publishing this summer, explores themes of memory, self-discovery, and the stories we carry.
Dr. Della Hardman was a pioneering artist, educator, and civic leader who made Martha’s Vineyard her home. Through her work, she championed the importance of the arts, education, and cultural preservation, often reminding those around her to “savor the moment.” Over the years, Della Hardman Day has been organized and stewarded by her daughter, Andrea Taylor, continuing a multigenerational commitment to preserving Dr. Hardman’s legacy and creating space for reflection, storytelling, and community.
“‘Our Stories, Our Legacy’ reflects both Dr. Hardman’s life’s work and the continued importance of storytelling in shaping who we are,” said Taylor. “With Mara Brock Akil joining us this year, we are honored to bring together two legacies rooted in the power of narrative — one lived, one still unfolding. And in that spirit, we invite everyone to truly savor the moment together.”
The event will include a keynote conversation and remarks, community gathering and celebration, and opportunities to engage with local cultural organizations. Copies of “The Revelation of Dionne Daphne” will be available. This event is free and open to the public.
