Heading back to the Island after a week of gatherings and celebrations with close and extended family in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.

On September 11, after Rosh Hashanah dinner with family, we climbed a hill, and through the clouds beheld the four-mile-tall beams of light rising from Manhattan. A tribute that asks us not to forget what has happened, but to begin with the memory intact and firm resolve.

May we pay attention to what we are carrying, release what constricts us, the belief we cannot change, and choose what we carry forward.

We are refreshed and eager to be returning to our lives and Liz and Kevin Oliver’s Menemsha Store, Iggy’s, Squid Roe and the Menemsha Texaco, the Galley, Larsen’s and the Menemsha Fish Market.

Wishing everyone tight lines as the M.V. Striped Bass Derby opens.

Dropping into the library to try painting with watercolors, Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 pm.

Finishing a blanket with help from the Community Knitting Circle, Thursdays 3 to 5 pm.

Meeting the painter Harriet Bernstein and learning about her while viewing “The Big Painting,” Friday, Sept. 18, at 4 pm.

Lunch-and-learn events return to the Chilmark library next week Friday, Sept. 25, from 11:30 am to 1 pm. The topic is “Seasonal Affective Disorder,” which hits many in the winter months. We can join the virtual call or come to the library to watch on Zoom and have lunch provided by the Menemsha Store. Registration is required.
