There are times that as columnists, we must write our columns way in advance due to unforeseen circumstances, and it feels like writing to the future. I’m typing this pre-storm, on Thursday, Sept. 24, as the wind picks up and the ferries are bobbing up and down on their way to Woods Hole and back. But writing for a community newspaper has its quirks, and one of them is that if Five Corners gets flooded, access to the newsroom is limited. Thus, I’m writing this a few days ahead of time. By the time you read this, it’ll be October, and I can’t even believe that.
Because of that, this week’s column will be a little different, inspired by Lis of mvacay.com, who recently shared her fall bucket list, and inspired me to write my own as well! I’d love to hear what’s on your bucket list, but here are some ideas and inspiration to get you started this season:
- Attend a ceramics open studio at Slough Farm, happening Tuesdays and Saturdays.
- Get the paper at the Edgartown Paper Store and sit on a Main Street bench and read it.
- Bid on a bass, with proceeds going to the Derby scholarship fund, local artists, and the Edgartown Board of Trade, online at bassinthegrassmv.com.
- Join Edgartown Books at the Carnegie for a discussion of Emma Cline’s novel, “Switzy,” on Oct.15, free to attend.
- Register for a sound bath with Trish Ginter on Oct. 17 at the Edgartown Free Public Library.
- Eat all the things at this year’s Morning Glory Farm Pumpkin Festival, taking place on Oct. 17.
- Swing by Edgartown Harbor and watch a nighttime M.V. Derby weigh-in take place, between 7 and 9 pm.
- Take a foliage tour of Mytoi Gardens, and see how October looks on Chappy.
- Check out “Ponies & Pumpkins” at Misty Meadow on Oct. 17, starting at 10 am, a fun family event.
- Eat lunch at the Edgartown Council on Aging; this happens Tuesdays and Fridays, at noon and you must register by noon the day before to reserve your spot.
- Pop into the Old Sculpin Gallery and check out the work being featured this month.
- Sip ’n Stitch at Erica Wilson happens every Thursday from 6 to 7:30 pm, and is a great way to connect with needlepoint enthusiasts!
- Take a casting lesson from Kismet Outfitters.
- Go into Rosewater Market, and if they have mocha rolls, make sure to get one for yourself and a couple for a friend. Made with Chilmark Coffee, they are to die for.
- Shop the sales at Soft as a Grape, and start stocking up on holiday gifts.
- CB Stark Jewelers was recently recognized as one of America’s coolest jewelry stores by InStore magazine — stop by the shop and confirm how cool they are!
- Grab a morning bagel at Edgartown Meat & Fish Market, and a pumpkin-spice latte from their in-store Starbucks.
- Have a lovely time with the complimentary Friday wine tastings at Bettini, if you’re booked for a dinner reservation at the restaurant: such a fun and new experience.
- Dress up for Edgartown’s Happy Haunting, which happens Oct. 25 from 10 am to 1 pm. What’s your Halloween costume this year?
Birthday wishes go out to Ray Ewing on Oct. 1, Mandy Epstein, Ellen Gaskill, and Jim Feiner on Oct. 2, Dee Landers on Oct. 3, Ivona Sabeva on Oct. 4, and my bestest friend Abby Gardner on Oct. 6! Wishing you all a great birthday and year ahead!
