Lillian Yvonne Anderson, 80, passed away peacefully at home in Edgartown on June 25, 2026, surrounded by love. Born on Dec. 5, 1945, in Nancy, France, she lived a life marked by creativity, resilience, curiosity, and an extraordinary affection for animals.

Lillian spent part of her childhood with her grandparents in France before rejoining her mother. As a teenager, she made the courageous journey to America, arriving in Boston on Valentine’s Day to find a snowstorm and a world where she did not yet speak the language. She eventually made Martha’s Vineyard her home, carrying her unmistakable French accent and independent spirit with her.

An accomplished, award-winning Island artist, Lillian painted and sold numerous works and received many ribbons and honors at Vineyard art shows. She was especially gifted at portraiture, including commissioned paintings of children created from family photographs. Her talents extended to charcoal and pencil drawings, poetry, and writing. Fellow artist Betty Fazio was a cherished friend and mentor.

Lillian also had a remarkable eye for treasures, particularly rare and antique books. She delighted in collecting them, discovering their stories, and recognizing something special that others might overlook.

Her life was not without hardship. Over the years, Lillian survived three battles with cancer, including two experiences with colon cancer that required surgery, and a hysterectomy when cancer threatened her uterus. She faced these challenges with remarkable determination and strength.

Animals held a special place in Lillian’s heart. She adored her dogs and cats, including Friday and Sammy, and even welcomed wild skunks to her doorstep for their nightly meals. To Lillian, every creature deserved kindness.

Lillian was predeceased by her son, Donnie, and her longtime companion, Marian Cardoza. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Dolores Borza and Sandra (“Sandy”) VanKirk; stepchildren Donna and Bobby Anderson; grandchildren Michael and Amanda VanKirk; great-grandchildren Bryan, Nolan, Nathaniel, and Amanda’s two children; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Lillian’s life will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, which would have been her 81st birthday, at the Portuguese-American Club (P.A. Club) at 137 Vineyard Ave. in Oak Bluffs. Friends and community members are warmly invited to remember her, and view a special display of her artwork.

In her memory, the family has organized “Lillian’s Legacy of Love” (32auctions.com/lillianslegacyoflove), an online silent auction featuring original paintings and drawings from her personal collection. Bidding runs Nov. 1–30, with proceeds benefiting Second Chance Animal Rescue of Martha’s Vineyard. Winning bidders may arrange to collect their artwork at the memorial.

Before her passing, Lillian learned of the plan to use her art to help rescued animals. The idea brought her tremendous happiness.

Her family hopes her art will find new homes while her compassion for animals continues to make a difference.
