West Tisbury firefighters extinguished a car fire Saturday afternoon. Just before 1 pm, firefighters and police converged on Nip N Tuck Lane, where a gray 1972 Mercedes convertible was “fully engulfed from the front end,” according to Police Chief Matt Mincone.
Firefighters knocked down the flames with foam, Fire Chief Manuel Estrella III said. The driver and passenger, Alexander Porter and Erin Porter of Marston Mills, were driving along Nip N Tuck Lane when “thick smoke began to pour into the vehicle,” Chief Mincone said, “and it went up in flames.”
The Porters escaped injury. The fire appeared to start under the dashboard, Chief Estrella said and was likely electrical. Chief Mincone said there was nothing suspicious about the incident. JWL Transport and Towing hauled the burned convertible away. JWL owner John Leite said the car did not appear salvageable.
