The U.S. Coast Guard cleared the Steamship Authority Island Home for a return to service following a mechanical problem on Oct. 7, SSA spokesman Sean Driscoll told The Times. The vessel made its 1:15 pm crossing from Woods Hole.
The Island Home suffered a mechanical problem in Woods Hole ahead of its 8:15 am run Thursday morning, and was taken out of service. The freight ferry Sankatay was brought into service to cover crossings, according to Driscoll. The problem with the Island Home had to do with the propulsion shaft, he said.
“There is an issue with a bearing on the main propulsion shaft,” Driscoll messaged Thursday morning.
The SSA sent out an alert at around 10:30 am canceling trips at 10:45 am and 12 noon.

Marty Nadler renamed it “Broken Home” around the first year it was in service. I’ve called it that ever since.
I think Marty also was the first to give the Steamship Authority its motto: “We’re not happy until you’re not happy”.
Ugly is as ugly does.
Good for you.
