To the Editor:
I own a retail store in Vineyard Haven and have noticed for some time that teenagers applying for jobs are commonly lacking basic job hunting skills. This week, when a young girl came into the store and asked for a job while still on her phone, it prompted me to pass on these tips.
1. Dress for the job you are looking for. If you want to work in a shop dealing with the public don’t wear cut offs and midriff exposing tank tops.
2. Even if you don’t have previous experience, bring in a sheet to leave a prospective employer with contact information and a little bit about you and any skills you might have.
3. Apply alone and not in a pack. And a smile goes a long way.
I hope this is the help that it is intended to be. Good luck to all.
