Negative effect

To the Editor:

If you have dined out in Vineyard Haven in the past eight years, then we have probably met. Over the years I have given thousands of lectures concerning why we should have a beer and wine license in Tisbury.

I started to reflect on my travels to resort islands throughout the world, and began to realize what these places have in common. The majority of real estate on resort islands is devoted to the hospitality business. The people who pump the gas, flip the burgers, and keep the lights on usually live in very poor conditions.

I understand that tourism is our only industry. The question is, Do we want our entire island to become a resort?

I moved to Vineyard Haven many years ago for the peace, quiet, and wonderful quality of life. I now believe that a liquor license in our town may affect our lives in a negative way forever.
