The Island’s Mass Casualty Unit van is parked and available when needed for an emergency response.
The van contains various kinds of emergency medical equipment that would allow first responders to handle a disaster such as an airplane crash.
A dictionary is likely not part of the equipment. Emblazoned on the side of the van in bold letters is “Mass Casuality Unit.”
“It was an oversight, it wasn’t noticed,” said Peter Martell, emergency management services coordinator for Oak Bluffs, and a member of the Island-wide committee that manages the Unit.
“It’s a valuable asset,” a slightly embarrassed Mr. Martell said. “A misspelling won’t change that. The stuff inside is most important.”
