Bridge heads

Six tables were in play at the Bridge Club of M.V. Saturday, in the Tisbury senior center.

Top scores of pairs sitting north/south were those of Bea Phear and Carol Whitmarsh. Linda Schapiro and Donald Schapiro were runners up.

At east/west Loretta Young and Doris White were best. Trudy Ulmer and Regina McDonough were second best.

33rd Moffett

The thirty-third annual George Moffett Race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, under the organizing authority of the Holmes Hole Sailing Association. The race will be in memory of veteran sailor, yachtsman George Moffet and former HHSA Commodore Pat West.

Entry forms are available on line at www.holmeshole.org and must be returned with $40 to Holmes Hole Sailing Association, c/o Gates, 26 Ocean View Farm, Chilmark, 02535.

22nd Sullivan 5K

U.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin, M.D. will join former Secretary of Health & Human Services Dr. Louis W. Sullivan and his wife E. Ginger Sullivan at the 22nd 5K Run/Walk Road Race for Health & Fitness, on Saturday, August 28. There will also be a quarter-mile Kids Only Run that morning.

Pre-registration is $15 ($5 for Kids Fun Run) and number pickup will be at the main lobby of the M.V. Hospital from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Download forms on www.mvhospital.com/run/walk. On race day, register at Washington Park (opposite Our Market) for $20, benefit of the M.V. Hospital.

Jabberwocky 5K

The second 5K Run for Jabberwocky plus a half-mile Frabjous run/walk/wheel will be Saturday, August 21 begins at 9 am (8:30 am walkers, 10:30 am half-mile) at the Farm Institute in Edgartown. Register $25, $12 for half-mile. Register 9 am to 12:30 pm, Friday at Camp Jabberwocky, Vineyard Haven; or Saturday, 7:15 to 8:15 am at race site. For more information visit campjabberwocky.org.

Chappy Pong

The third annual all-Island table tennis tournament will be held Saturday at the Chappaquiddick Community Center, sponsored by the Center, using tournament tables and equipment provided by the Island’s M.V. Table Tennis Club. Players of all skill levels are welcome. No fees are required and finalists will be rewarded with stipends for pies from Morning Glory Farm. Tennis at Mattakesett

Paul Adler and Joseph Lambrosa teamed to defeat Eric Gang and Patrick Tzanis and win the men’s doubles competition at the Mattakesett-Winnetu tennis tournament, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, Sunday.

Patrick and April Tzanis were the winning couple at mixed doubles, claiming the final match 6-1, 7-5.

Samantha’s Odyssey

Thirteen-year-old Samantha Potter of Oak Bluffs was busy. She and Sam Protzman teamed to win the East Chop Mixed Doubles tournament. Then she and partner Palmer Kleeman defeated Gretchen Massey and Allie Hyzak to take the East Chop Ladies Doubles championship.

She played in the USTA VYT Classic and won the girls 14 and under division. Finally, she competed for the East Chop Ladies Single Championship, narrowly losing to Lynn Herrick 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.

Also at VYT, Connor Downing won the boys’ 12 & under division. Alex Adamczyck won the boys’ 24 & under defeating Sam Lahart, 6-3, 6-0.

Wednesday Top Gun action is winding down.

In August 11 action, Reid Yennie defeated Kent Leonard, 6-4, 7-5. Darst King beat Justice Yennie, 2-6, 7-5 (10-6). David Steiner defeated Samantha Potter, 6-3, 6-4. Patrick Dunk beat Patrick McCarthy 6-4, 3-6, (10-1).

Getting their kicks

Last Thursday at Tisbury’s Veterans Memorial Park in MV Football (soccer) association action the Group A MV Celtic edged Coop deVille, 2-1 on two goals by Rory Shepard. Erly Pinheiro scored for the Coop. Evaraldo Fernandes, Tom Higgins and Pinheiro earned yellow cards, Everaldo also received a red card.

That same evening in Group B action, Shirley’s Hardware and Monto Orthopedics played to a 1-1 tie. Aaron Robinson found the Monto net. Paolo Miranda penetrated the Hardware’s defense.
