Ice hockey: Mites hot on ice

The red-hot Martha’s Vineyard Travel Mites defeated Lower Cape Cod, Sunday, 5-2.

Hunter Meader started the scoring assisted by Aiden Araujo. The Cape team responded, taking the lead with two goals. Logan Araujo’s marker evened the count. In the third period Jackson Pachico earned a hat trick assisted by Aiden Araujo, Logan Araujo and Kenny Hatt. Goalie Mycha Vought closed the door to maintain the winning advantage.

The Cape & Islands Junior Highs skated to a 2-2 tie with Yarmouth-Dennis at the MV Arena, Sunday. The Islanders struck first with a goal by Jack Slayton assisted by Mason Jeffers and Jonas Lukowitz. Y-D answered with two goals, one in the second period and another in the third. With time running out, Will MacDonald made a nice centering pass to Nick Kent who made no mistake tying the score.

Closing the Gate

Sunday, in a hard fought game, the MV Peewees defeated Gateway of Wareham at Tabor Academy, 5-2.

Scoring for the Vineyard were Shay Sullivan assisted by Kylie Hatt, JJ Mendez helped by Justin Alexander, Colin Buckley unassisted, JJ Mendez aided by Jack Garret, and Jack Garret abetted by Shay Sullivan. Colin Buckley and Saige Arougio provided a strong attacking offense. Sullivan, Hatt and Gunderson were effective on defense.

Cathal Robinson and Zach Fullin guarded the Vineyard net.

Gateway could not match the Islanders hustling physical style.
