A funny thing happened to the Vineyard’s boys basketball team last Wednesday, while they were waiting for Friday’s notice of their high seed in the post-season MIAA pairings,
They trailed the Norton Lancers by 19 points at the half in the final game of their season, February 23, having scored only seven points in the second quarter. But the Vineyarders came out of the locker room on fire after a half time break, closeted with head coach Mike Joyce.
The jam-packed Sancy Pachico gym came alive as Vineyard fans watched the purple and whites outscore Norton 29-10 in the third quarter and finish with a 70-61 win.
Uncharacteristically quiet with just six points in the first half, Randall Jette scored 13 in the third quarter and finished with a game-high 30, including two from long range and 16 freebies.
Peter Keaney added 21 big ones, 10 in the third quarter.
All of TJ VanGerven’s eight points were posted in the second half.
The Islanders finished the season with a 17-3 record, tops in the Eastern Athletic Confrence.
It was senior night, and special recognitiion was accorded three seniors, Randall Jette, TJ VanGerven, and Ben Ciciora.
