The Martha’s Vineyard seventh grade girls travel basketball team repeated its 2010 championship performance and won the Sandwich March Madness tournament last weekend in Sandwich.

The Islanders won their first game, Saturday, trouncing Barnstable, 49-12. Mya Houston and Kaitlyn Marchand led scorers, each with 10 points. Bourne was next to fall after a tough, close battle. Marchand was MV’s top scorer with 11.

The Sunday semi-final game pitted the Vineyarders against the host team, Sandwich. The Blue Knights played an aggressive game and suffered the loss of two girls after they fouled out. MV won 27-24 with Erin Hill leading the way to the rim and scoring 9 points.

Bourne beat Carver in the semi-final round qualifier to meet the Vineyard in the finals, a repeat of last year’s tournament.

The Islanders started slowly but with solid defense (at least eight blocked shots by Sam Hargy) and sharp passing the Islanders prevailed, 27-20. Sharron Morris was high scorer with 9. Whitney Schroeder finished with 8, including two key free throws to ice it at the end of the game.
