Each year following the Labor Day holiday, many of the Island’s service industry professionals gather together on Tuesday afternoons to play softball at Veterans Park in Vineyard Haven.

The final event of the fall softball schedule, played on the Tuesday after Halloween, is affectionately known as the Island No Saints Day Softball Classic. In a game genuinely unlike any other you are likely to see, the players sport their finest Halloween costumes in a day- long romp around the bases.

In years past, teams were chosen roughly along town lines, with Oak Bluffs restaurant staffers taking on those from Edgartown, with folks working in the other Vineyard towns sprinkled in.

Nowadays, though, the teams are an ever-changing mix, where players are chosen by a team captain and once the game is completed, new teams are drawn.

In Tuesday afternoon’s contests, 20 players were on hand and divided up perfectly into two ten-man squads. The first game was a competitive affair, ending in a 9-6 score. The second game was similarly contested. Most importantly, the games were played in good spirits and all the participants had fun.
