Vineyard YMCA Makos make a splash in opening meets

The Makos Swim Club of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard opened its season earlier this month with a pair of away meets.

On December 17, the Makos competed in a three-team meet at Sandwich High School versus the Sandwich Wahoos and Team Turbo of Plymouth. The Makos swam to second place in a meet filled with personal best times.

Individual event winners for the Makos included Isabella Tocci and Robert Goodale (8 and under). Renee Goodale, Lia Potter, Emily Moore, and Jack Rizza (11-12 year olds), Patrick Best, Tucker Cosgrove (13-14 year olds), Taylor Brasefield, Galya Walt, and Liam Cosgrove (15 and over).

Relay event winners included Renee Goodale, Lia Potter, Galya Walt. and Charlotte Hammond.

Other Makos with personal best times were: Lila Sullivan, Harrison Dorr, Madison Lopez-Matta, Jade Correll, Aidan Varkonda, Lucy Thompson, Oscar Thompson, and Alistair Rizza.

On December 10 at Lincoln Hancock Pool in Quincy, the Makos competed in their first meet of the season against teams from Marshfield, Nantucket, Sandwich, Eastham, and Plymouth in the SEMSL Sprint Swim Meet.

The Makos, twenty-one swimmers in all, raced to a 4th place finish, gaining 361 points, nearly 300 more points than the Makos received at this meet last year. Nearly all Mako swimmers achieved personal best times in several races.

Highlights for 8 and under and 9-10 year old swimmers included: Robert Goodale (1st, 25-yard backstroke), Nicholas Cowan (6th, 25-yard breaststroke), Anna Nitardy (3rd, 25-yard butterfly). Isabella Tocci (7th, 25-yard backstroke). Anne Culbert (15th, 25-yard breaststroke), and Madison Lopez-Matta (15th, 25-yard backstroke).

The Makos also excelled in the 11, 12, and 13 year-old divisions. Top finishers were: Lia Potter (1st, 50-yard butterfly and freestyle). Renee Goodale (2nd, 50-yard breaststroke), Salyn Yancey (21st, 50-yard backstroke), Jack Rizza (4th 50-yard backstroke), Harrison Dorr (5th, 50-yard backstroke), Danny Mullen (18th, 50-yard freestyle), Perry Bliss (19th, 50-yard freestyle), Liam Cosgrove (4th, 50-yard backstroke), Patrick Best (4th, 50-yard breaststroke), Tucker Cosgrove (6th, 50-yard butterfly), Lila Sullivan (12th, 50-yard butterfly), Alistair Rizza ( 11th, 50-yard breaststroke), and Taylor Brasefield (22nd, 50-yard freestyle).

Additionally, the Makos swam to several top 4 finishes in their relay races.

The Makos Swim Club is a competitive swim team, open to boys and girls ages 6-18 coached by Rainy Goodale and David Espindle.

The club’s next meet will be at the Vineyard YMCA against the Nantucket Dolphins and West Swimming of Eastham, Jan. 7th.
