Gymnastics

The Island Gymnastics Training School Preteam B girls competed in the Teddy Bear Bingo meet held at Paradise Gym in Walpole on March 18, 2012.

Several Islanders gave standout performances. Margaret Hoff scored a 9.5 on bars and Julia Sayre posted an 8.6. Kaleigh Bolin scored an 8.8 on balance beam. Hannah Tate-Arena turned in an 8.5 on floor. The gymnasts were coached by Jamie Conroy.

Team gymnast Rose Herman competed in the USA gymnastics Beach Party Invitational, held at Rachel Hall in Cambridge on March 18, 2012. Rose scored an 8.9 for her floor routine and was coached by Beth Goodell, founder of Island Gymnastics.

Preteam A gymnast Kasey Varkonda competed in her first USA gymnastics sanctioned meet at the Amore Meet held at Gym and More in Woburn on February 11, 2012. Kasey scored an 8.5 for her floor routine and was also coached by Beth Goodell.

Island Gymnastics Training team and preteams competed in the New England Sports Academy in-house meet held in Westwood on November 12. Tabor Estrella excelled and placed first in three out of four routines for her Rookie Child division. Other participants were, Kasey Varkonda, Margaret Hoff, Kayleigh Bolin, Hannah Tate-Arena, and Rose Herman.

Island Gymnasts host Sandcastle

The 19th annual Sandcastle meet will by held at Island Gymnastics at their gym in West Tisbury on April 1. Island gymnasts will host New England Sports Academy from Westwood, and In-Flight Gymnastics from Connecticut. The event starts at 12:15 pm.

MV Youth Soccer Season Opens

MV United travel soccer teams start the new South Coast Soccer League season with a bang as five teams play home games on Saturday, March 31, and four teams play home on Sunday, April 1.

Soccer families are invited to cheer on the teams while they register younger players for the new and improved spring recreational league. “We’re really excited about the rec league, which will now feature licensed coaches who will coordinate and support the many volunteer coaches who form the backbone of the youth program,” said President Richard Bennett. Registration for the rec league and the travel games will take place at Veterans Field, and all are invited to register players, cheer on the home teams and exchange outgrown shoes and other soccer equipment. “We hope to make this an annual event, combining the spring registration with home games, fans, food, and fun,” Mr. Bennett added.

Games begin at 11 am on March 31 and 12 noon on April 1.

Over The Hill gang returns

Vineyard FC, the Island’s entry in the New England Over The Hill Soccer League, opens its regular season against Milton United Sunday at 9:30 am at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven.
