Chris Magill of Rhode Island wins 19th Memorial Day 5K

Chris Magill of Cumberland, Rhode Island, was the first of 440 runners to cross the finish line Sunday morning in the 19th annual Memorial Day 5K in Oak Bluffs.

The Ocean Stater finished the race in 16:02, 12 seconds ahead of Corey Loonan of Oak Bluffs.

For the women, Marisa Strange of Pleasant Valley, New York, finished first (15th overall) with a time of 18:50.

In all, 589 runners and walkers competed in the 5K run, 5K walk, and the one-mile fun run. Proceeds from the event benefited Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard.

The first walker to the tape, Norman Boucher, also from Cumberland, Rhode Island, completed the East Chop course in 31:47, well ahead of many runners.

Prior to the 5K, Aldan Furlong of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, won the fun run in 6:15.

Filling out the top ten in the 5K run were: (3) Cal Evans, Stoneham, 16:30; (4) Caleb Evanter, Marblehead, 16:31; (5) Kellen Everafter, Kent, Wash., 16:54; (6) Matthew Zanchi, Natick, 17:03; (7) Kaleb Evantis, Marblehead, 17:26; (8) Michael Norton, Waquoit, 17:41; (9) Ken Gartner, West Falmouth, 17:56; and (10) Michael Gallagher, New Haven, Conn., 18:01.

For the women, the rest of the top five were: (18th overall) Ella Martin, Woods Hole, 19:06; (23) Grace Chang, Media, Penn., 19:53; (26) Erin Duffy, Keene, N.H., 20:06; and (36) Kristin Scott, Southport, Conn., 21:15.

Of the many Islanders to run with distinction, rounding out the top five men behind Corey Loonan were: (12th overall) Jose Alves, Oak Bluffs, 18:36; (19) James Lanctot, Oak Bluffs, 19:39; (21) Todd Cleland, Oak Bluffs, 19:49; (24) Seth Harlow, Oak Bluffs, 20:00.

For the Vineyard women the top five were: (38th overall) Devon Smith, Oak Bluffs, 21:22; (40) Hilda Lewis, Oak Bluffs, 21:24; (49) Ocean Eversley, Oak Bluffs, 21:43; (57) Gail Favreau, Vineyard Haven, 22:04; and (94) Robin Breen, Edgartown, 23:25.

Melissa Kuehne of Edgartown and Katie Fuller of West Tisbury were the top Vineyard walkers, finishing in a virtual dead heat at 45:28 and 45:29.

Bryce Cioffi, 5, of Chilmark was the fastest local in the fun run and placed 19th in 8:19. Ryan Koster of Oak Bluffs finished 20th in 8:28.

Kelly Klaren, 11, of West Tisbury, took first in the female 1- to 12-year-old division, with a time of 27:06.
