Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Club results

Many of the Island’s devoted duplicate bridge players are heading off to Newton this weekend for tournament play. Before departing though they sharpened their bridge prowess at local games.

On Tuesday, January 1 at the Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Club (MVBC), David Donald and Michel Riel took first place with a 76.39 percent average game. Carol Whitmarsh and Foster Greene came in second with a 54.17 percent average game and Gerry Averill and Sue Collinson were third place finishers with a 52.08 percent average game. Eighteen bridge players greeted the New Year at the MVBC game.

On Thursday, December 27 at the Island Bridge Club (IBC) gathering Bea Phear and Cecily Greenaway took first place with a 65 percent average game. Second place finishers Barbara Silk and Nancy Neil had a 55 percent average game and Foster Greene and Anita Persson were close behind in third place with a 54 percent average game. Twelve players were at the tables.

The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) sanctions three island duplicate bridge clubs: the MVBC, the IBC and the recently created Edgartown Bridge Club. It is not necessary to belong to the ACBL in order to join these duplicate competitions.

The MVBC game is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm at the Stone Church in Vineyard Haven. Admission is $4. Contact Sue at 508-693-9396 or posturepal@aol.com for assistance in finding an available partner.

The IBC game is held Thursday evenings at 7pm at the Up Island Council on Aging Howes House in West Tisbury. Players needing a partner are urged to contact Gerry at 508-693-2889 or gsaverill@gmail.com by noon on Wednesday for assistance. Admission is $5.
