The flu continues its rampage, taking down entire families in its path. The Chilmark School has seen lots of flu-related absences and a concert that was supposed to happen on Wednesday was cancelled due to the flu. Let’s hope this thing runs its course quickly. In the meantime if you are sick, please stay home.

In other happier news there was much rejoicing in Aquinnah (well on Facebook anyway) about the Patriots 41-28 win over the Houston Texans. The Patriots will host the Ravens this Sunday at 6:30 pm. Go Pats!

The Aquinnah Public Library has extended the fine amnesty through Valentine’s Day. Bring in a donation for the Island Food Pantry and have your fines waived. They are also holding all day coffee/tea hour on Saturdays, so stop by any time between 10 am and 4 pm and get a cup of coffee or tea. Don’t forget that they now have a Facebook page: be sure to “like” it and check in regularly for updates of their programs.

The Vineyard Playhouse will present the first “Shakespeare for the Masses” of 2013 this weekend. You can come see me and some other very fine actors in “Hamlet” at the Katherine Cornell Theater (the Playhouse is still being renovated) this Friday and Saturday at 7 pm. It’s free and about an hour.

On Monday night at the Chilmark Community Center there will be an “Inaugural Ball” Vineyard style to celebrate Obama’s and Elizabeth Warren’s inauguration from 7 to 10 pm. Please bring a finger food to share and the beverage of your choice. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will play. Tickets are $10.

The MV Center for Living will hold its first cultural luncheon of the New Year on January 26 from noon to 2 pm at the Grill on Main. The guest speaker will be Ann Smith from Featherstone. Tickets are $25. And you can purchase them by calling 508-939-9440.

There will be two special town meetings on February 5 starting at 7 pm. Please try to attend. The first is to handle the business that didn’t get handled at the last special town meeting because there was no quorum. The second is to talk about the town taking ownership of the lighthouse, restoring it and moving it. A very hot topic these days; as a reminder, we need 40 people for a quorum.

On Saturday, February 9, at 7pm the Chilmark School will hold its annual fundraiser at the Chilmark Community Center. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will be performing and this is usually a great party with lots of things to buy in the silent auction and lots of dancing. Tickets are available from any Chilmark School parent, like me.

Try and stay healthy, everyone!
