The Memorial Day town picnic was a resounding success. Good music, good food, and spectacular sunshine brought out the best in people. Children lined up for pony rides, to pat the alpacas, and to put on life jackets so they could ride in the row boats. The hot dogs were so good one little boy just sat down right there to begin enjoying his feast. Oh, and the ice cream was also great.
Saturday morning you can join MV Democrats at Howes House on West Tisbury from 9 to 10:30 to kick off Island participation for Ed Markey. June 25 is the election for the U.S. Senate. You can get campaign literature and absentee ballot information, and volunteer for phone banks.
Join the First Baptist Church this week for Youth Worship Sunday at 11 am for creation stories “…in the beginning.” These stories are part of every cultural and religious tradition and will be told by the Felted Hats Puppet Theater. Mark your calendars for some fun: Next Sunday is Bloomsday on the Island. The annual celebration of music, drama, and dance based on the life of James Joyce will be at 8 pm at the Cornell theatre. The YMCA offers a free meditation drop-in program on Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 am. Bring a soft cushion for your seat. Meditation can change how you experience your life.
The annual strawberry fest will be held at the West Tisbury Congregational Church on Saturday, June 22, from noon to 4 pm. Shortcakes, smoothies, berries and ice cream, berries and cream, or even berries to go will be offered.
Save the date. Broadway is coming to the Island. Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson will perform in “Love Letters” on Tuesday, July 2, at the MVRHS Performing Arts Center. Best of all, it is a benefit for the Vineyard Playhouse. So we win on all counts.
Clothes To Go at the Stone Church is where you should donate clean usable clothing for Islanders. The summer hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm and Saturday from 9 to 11 am. Seasonal clothing is preferred.
