I know it doesn’t feel like anything other than winter here, but it is getting better. There are little white flowers coming up, lambs being born, and the calendar pages keep turning, which means that eventually it will be July, and it is never 11° in July. So it will get warmer.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival was this past weekend, and it was wonderful. There were so many great films, including a short film by Aquinnah filmmakers Ken Wentworth and Liz Witham. I saw some Aquinnah people volunteering — Wendy Swolinzky and Lisa Vanderhoop. And many people from Aquinnah were in the audience, such as Jim and Kathy Newman, John and Chris Murphy, Allen Rugg and Suzanne Boyer, Juli Vanderhoop. Jay and Francoise Theise came in from Boston for the weekend to attend. Local food was prepared by Robert Lionette, and there were many treats available as well, including popcorn grown by Morning Glory Farm which was some of the best popcorn I have ever had. Some of the films were rather intense — Going Clear, Cartel Land — so thank goodness there were some lighter films— Henri Henri, and Hip Hop-eration. It was such a good festival, and great to see everyone come out in the frigid temperatures to eat and watch movies together.
There is a free Dental Clinic on Friday, March 27, at the Aquinnah Town Hall. Preregistration is required. Please contact Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org or Debbie Simon at Vineyard Smiles, 508-696-0020, ext. 14.
There is a lot of great stuff coming up at the library. First of all, there is an Afterschool Program on Thursday afternoons at 4 pm, and it is open to all children in kindergarten through grade 5. The program is called Biblio Fun. There is just one more coffee hour, and it is this Saturday. Also on Saturday, from noon to 3 pm, the craft will be seed planting and from 2 to 3 pm the library will host Earth Hour, a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. On Saturday, April 4, there will be a spring egg hunt. This was a huge success last year; it starts at 10:30 am sharp. In addition to the hunt, there will be fun crafts and refreshments. Saturday, April 11, will be Scrabble Day from noon to 3 pm: drop-ins are welcome, with prizes for the highest single-word score.
This weekend is the time to paint eggs at the Duck Inn, on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. The theme this year is helping butterflies. The egg hunt will be Sunday, April 5, at 1 pm. Contact Elise LeBovit for more information at 508-645-9018.
Saturday, April 11, the Vineyard Conservation Society will hold its 23rd annual Beach Cleanup around the Island. More details to follow about specific locations and times.
Some really great Aquinnah ladies have their birthdays this week. Today is June Manning’s birthday. Happy birthday, June, and may you have many more. Jeffie Butler celebrates on March 27, and Heidi Vanderhoop celebrates on March 30. Be sure you wish them a happy birthday if you see them.
