The weather conditions didn’t dampen spirits on Kennebec Avenue in Oak Bluffs on Friday night, where Martha’s Vineyard Gourmet Cafe and Bakery reopened the phenomenon known as Back Door Doughnuts to a line of eagerly waiting pastry seekers.

The after-hours spot and late-night rite of passage for Islanders and visitors alike started back up for its newest season, once again slinging delicious delicacies including their famous apple fritters and maple bacon doughnuts, among other favorites.

Along with the heavenly bites, the late night institution is known for the long lines that form through the parking lot of the Reliable Market in Oak Bluffs, and the savory aromas that pump out the doors, tempting night owls in the downtown area.

If you haven’t stopped by yet, make some time to get there this week before the masses embark on the Island and the lines get exponentially longer.

Back Door Doughnuts is open nightly through Saturday, April 26, from 7 pm to 1 am. After that they’ll be open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night until Memorial Day, when they’ll go back to seven nights a week.
