The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) boys’ varsity tennis team went 2-1 last week in three league contests, with an away loss to Bishop Feehan and two home wins against Bishop Stang and Somerset Berkley, bringing the Vineyarders’ record to 5-3.
At Bishop Feehan Tuesday afternoon, April 28, Zak Danz played first singles and lost 0-6, 4-6, while Connor Downing played second singles and won 6-2, 6-3. Dunovan Belisle and Max Hammond played well at second doubles, but lost 2-6, 4-6. At third singles David Webster got crushed 0-6, 0-6, and at second doubles James Kelliher and Graham Lewis lost 2-6, 1-6.
“Feehan is just much deeper than us this year,” Head Coach Eric Meyer told The Times via text. “They graduate their top two players this year, though.”
Last Wednesday and Friday the team had big wins over Bishop Stang and Somerset Berkley, respectively. Connor Downing won both contests in the number-one singles spot 6-0, 6-0, and Zak Danz won both contests in the number-two singles spot, 6-0, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
At Bishop Stang, David Webster lost third singles 2-6, 3-6, Dunovan Belisle and Max Hammond won at first doubles 6-0, 6-0, and James Kelliher and Graham Lewis won at second doubles 6-1, 6-0.
Against Somerset Berkley, Dunovan Belisle won at third singles in double doughnuts, 6-0, 6-0, Max Hammond and James Kelliher won at first doubles 6-0, 6-1, and Graham Lewis and Charlie Parkhurst won at second doubles 6-2, 6-1.
“The team is beginning to really come together now, and I’m hoping all of the injuries are behind us,” Coach Meyer told The Times. “We have a busy couple of weeks coming up, and will need contributions from everyone.”
This week the team was away Wednesday at Somerset Berkley, and away Thursday at Barnstable High School. The next home match is Saturday, May 9, at 3 pm versus Nauset Regional High School in a non-league contest.
