Fred Scott, 56, of Edgartown died of natural causes on May 11, 2015, in Phoenix, Ariz. Fred is best known to Vineyard residents for his smiling face at the Stop and Shop in Edgartown, or behind the tiller of his beloved Lil Dipper.

Fred, originally from Hingham, was predeceased by his parents, Gertrude (Trudy) and Jack Scott. He leaves behind four siblings, Joanne Scott of West Tisbury, Patricia Scott Mann of Indianapolis, John Scott of West Tisbury and St. John’s, and Michelle Scott Brown of Bluffton, S.C. He loved his nieces and nephews, including Benjamin Stafford of Oak Bluffs, Tabor Stafford of Boston, Brendan Flory of Asheville, N.C., and Scott Flory of Dallas. Fred is the great-uncle of beloved grandnieces and -nephews Benjamin Jr., Bianca, and Olivia.

Fred graduated from Hingham High School. His siblings remember him most for his wry sense of humor, his unending kindness, and his love of family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, 111 Edgartown Rd., Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

A graveside service for Fred will be on Saturday, May 30, 3 pm, in the West Tisbury Cemetery, State Road. Family and friends will gather immediately following the service at the West Tisbury Congregational Church Parish Hall. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs.
