Congratulations to Rena Fischer on her hundredth birthday! A big family celebration was held this past Saturday at the Grange. Rena’s great-grandchildren were at the party, representing the 14th generation of Fischers on the Island.
Eleanor Neubert would like to invite everyone to a service for Mary Fischer this Saturday, June 20, at 1:30 pm at the West Tisbury Cemetery. The service will be followed by a celebration of Mary’s life at the Ag Hall. Refreshments will be provided.
Thank you to Pam Glavin for sharing the beautiful poem in honor of Carl Widdiss that appeared in last week’s paper. What a perfect way to remember this gentle man on his birthday.

Join Martha and Friends Trio for an afternoon of harmony and nostalgia on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 3:30 at the library. The performers include soprano Martha Child, pianist Phil Dietterich, baritone Dorian Lopes, and alto Mary-Jean Miner. Their repertoire includes old standards, including hits from the 1920s to the 1990s. They also feature some original arrangements. Audience members are never discouraged from singing along!
There will be a Teen Library Club (TLC) meeting on Wednesday, June 24, from 4 to 5 pm. TLC plans and promotes teen library programs, materials, and special community projects. This meeting will also have a movie and popcorn. Please join us, and make this library your own.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public meeting at the library on Tuesday, June 23, from 6:30 to 8 pm to present the plans for remediation of munitions and explosives in the Tisbury Great Pond. This is the public’s opportunity to learn about the proposed plan and the preferred remedial alternative. Questions and comments are invited. The proposed plan is available at the library for review. The public comment period is June 15 – July 17, 2015.
Time for the big Summer Reading kickoff! This event will be held at the Ag Hall on Saturday, June 27, at 11 am. Come at 10:30 for face painting (only $1!). Admission is $3 each (babes in arms are free). All the Island libraries come together to present a fun morning, with special guest Jungle Jim. This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” This event is sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
This Saturday, June 20, from 10 am to 2 pm is the annual Bread Sale in front of the Bunch of Grapes bookstore on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. This event is sponsored by the Vineyard Committee on Hunger. There will be breads from many Island bakers. Please feel free to bring your own baked goodies, beginning at 9 am.
The Island community’s work to feed the hungry has grown since the 1970s to include the local food pantry, as well as efforts to address food insecurity in the U.S. and around the world. Members of VCOH will be available to answer any questions or to provide more information on Serving Hands food distribution, the food pantry, or the family-to-family holiday meal program. The organization also sponsors events throughout the year to help educate and highlight food insecurity. Visit hungercommittee.org for more information.
The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury’s 27th annual Strawberry Festival will be on Saturday, June 20, 2015, from noon to 4 pm. Volunteers of all ages gather at 8 am. Look for the strawberry banner and bright balloons on the church fence in the center of West Tisbury. All proceeds from this fundraiser help support this historic church and our Island community. For more information, call 508-693-2842. The Strawberry Festival will be hosted indoors in the event of inclement weather.
If you missed a chance to drop by to Sheila Fane’s opening, she will be at the library on Friday, June 26, from 3 to 5 pm to show her work and answer questions about the different techniques she uses to create her art.
The Vineyard Artisans Festivals have begun. This year marks the festival’s 18th anniversary. Come and see the fabulous works of art that our Islands artists and artisans create. The festival is held at the Grange Hall, on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm.
Don’t forget that Wednesday Farmers’ Market has begun; who needs the Saturday crowds when you can shop during the week?
