The rain threatened earlier in the day, but luckily cleared the way for a festive 4th of July. Thank you to all emergency personnel who were on bikes, boats, four-wheelers, and more to make sure that the theme of the weekend stayed focused on fun and celebration.
We were lucky to get our whole crew out onto Norton on Sunday before the beach once again reached capacity to oncoming vehicles and needed to be closed. We got out there around 9:30 am, and enjoyed breakfast sandwiches straight off of Doug Werther’s grill. Closer to noon, Mikey Harmon grilled up some fresh bass, and between the two of them, we were treated to lamb and pork, then Paul In stepped up to the grill to prepare some amazing Korean barbeque tacos. Still, I believe Tom McDonald stole the show when he rolled up with his smoker and fired up a rack of ribs. You guys once again nailed beach eating. Finger lickin’ good, indeed.
I’m very glad that all my cars are registered and my license is up-to-date, because I rue the day I return to the DMV not to find Karen Jardin sitting behind the desk. As of last week, Karen is now happily retired. Congratulations, friend. Here’s to new adventures.
And then we have a couple of dudes just beginning their illustrious careers: Congrats to Zach Townes and Curtis Chandler on becoming the newest members of the Edgartown police force. I’m sure you will make us all proud.
The 2nd annual MV Sound Festival will take place July 11 and 12 in Waban Park, Oak Bluffs. In addition to righteous tunage, the event will include food, art and artisans, dancing, and fun for the kids.
CONNECT to end violence, the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Program of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will hold their 4th Annual SEAWALL Event on Saturday, July 11th from 11 am to 2 pm at the Vineyard Haven seawall. The event is an initiative of CONNECT’s Vineyard Men for Abuse Prevention (VMAP) group, which began in 2012 to bring together a network of like-minded, nonviolent men in an effort to build a safe community for those they love. Vineyard and visiting men are invited to stand on the seawall holding a poster indicating a woman they wish to honor. These men will hold a unified stance against domestic and sexual violence towards women, sending a message to the Island community that the majority of Island men do not tolerate violence against women. For further information or to register, contact Sara Leandro, Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Counselor at MVCS at 508-684-8074 x102.
The MV Film Society will host an event to benefit its youth scholarship programs Friday, July 24, from 7 to 9 pm at the Field Club. The evening will take its theme from Preston Sturges’ 1942 film “The Palm Beach Story.” Join fellow film lovers for a fun evening of cocktails, significant hors d’oeuvres, fun auction items, and live entertainment (including songs sung from the era). Come dressed in your favorite vintage or modern Palm Beach attire. For attire inspiration, event information, & to purchase tickets online, visit mvfilmsociety.com or call 508-696-9369.
