Islanders are among the eldest in the state of Massachusetts, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released last Thursday.
The median age of Dukes County residents on July 1, 2014, was estimated to be 46.7, a slight uptick from 46.5 the previous year, data from the USCB website revealed.
Among all counties in Massachusetts, Dukes trails only Barnstable (52) with respect to the median age of its residents, the report stated. Berkshire (46.1) rounded off the top three.
On the other end of the spectrum, Suffolk (32.4), Hampshire (35.7), and Middlesex (38.4) have the youngest residents, the report stated.
The trend exhibited by the Island population reflects an overall growth in median age nationwide. The U.S. median age increased from 37.6 to 37.7 from 2013 to 2014, according to the report.
Of all the Massachusetts counties, nine saw their median age increase between 2013 and 2014, while five remained unchanged, according to the report. None witnessed any decrease over the period.
