Spooky times are just ahead. The leaves are falling, and the air turns crisper. Halloween is this Monday. Beware of cemeteries and strange figures rustling through dark woods. Watch out for shrieking winds stealing past doors and into the peace of your home. You must especially watch out for many small, costumed human creatures going door to door and asking for candy. The best thing to do is to give it to them. If you would like to be visited by these apparitions and appease them with treats, contact me and I’ll put you on the trick or treat list.
At the library this week, today at 3:30 pm you can come in for Story Time. On Saturday Story Time is at 10:30 am. Also on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1:00 pm there is a Halloween Party! Slime making, spider making, costume parade, glow-in-the-dark tattoos, and of course candy. Come make some crafts and get some treats. This Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 4 pm is the Afterschool Club.

The fourth and fifth grade classes at the Chilmark School are holding a fundraiser this Friday, Oct. 28 to benefit Water for South Sudan. The fundraiser includes games that the kids made themselves, and many yummy baked goods. The fair is from 1:15 to 2:15 pm. Just in time to get a post-lunch treat; calories for a good cause don’t count.
It makes me very sad to write this: Kristin Maloney, who was the wonderful children’s librarian at the Chilmark Library, passed away last Thursday. There will be a graveside service this Saturday at 1 pm in the Abel’s Hill Cemetery in Chilmark. Kristin had such a way with all children, and she loved watching them grow in front of her eyes. I know she was especially delighted by watching children learn how to use the library and make it their own. She always had wonderful book suggestions for any reader. Her Saturday and Tuesday story times were the place to be for kids 7 and under for so many years. And so many parents were grateful that she created a musical story experience that they could enjoy as well. Kristin, you will be very missed by young and old. Thank you for all you did for the children of our community.

Congratulations to Sophia Welch and Kyle Colter, who were wed this past Saturday, in case you hadn’t heard. Family and friends came from all over to witness this young couple start out their lives together. Naushon Vanderhoop came from New York, Tiffany Smalley came from the West Coast, and of course a lot of family and friends were right here in Aquinnah. Much love and best of luck to the happy couple on a long, healthy, and loving life together.
