Alamjit Virk, M.D., has been named as the new medical director of emergency medicine and hospitalist services at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He has been working as staff physician at the hospital for about a year and a half.

He will replace Dr. Jeff Zack, who will remain on the MVH medical staff and continue to provide services in the ER as a staff physician.

Dr. Virk is a board-certified emergency medicine physician; before moving to Martha’s Vineyard, he was an attending physician in emergency medicine at Emerson Hospital in Concord.

“We are enormously pleased to welcome someone of Dr. Virk’s caliber to the MVH leadership team,” said CEO Joe Woodin in a press release. “His experience, expertise, and commitment to the practice of emergency medicine is a perfect fit for the emergency situations we deal with here on the Island, both in the summer and year-round.”

“Emergency physicians make immediate decisions regarding treatment, both in the pre-hospital setting and in the ER, to prevent death, disability, or further injury,” Woodin said. “With nearly 25 years’ experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Virk has been an outstanding addition to our organization.”

“I’m very excited to be joining the medical staff at MVH,” Dr. Virk said in the press release. “With the leadership provided by Dr. Jeff Zack prior to my assuming this role, I feel fortunate to be inheriting a well-run emergency medicine and hospitalist program. ”
