On Saturday, the Martha’s Vineyard High School girls and boys swim teams had their first home meet in over three weeks. Despite several personal best times, the girls and boys both lost to New Bedford. The girls lost 89-69 and the boys were defeated 83-55.
For the girls, co-captain Renee Goodale won two individual events, the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Her time of 26.71 In the 50 freestyle qualified her for the South Sectional meet. Goodale is the first Vineyard swimmer to qualify for the South Sectionals in three events—the 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. She also won the 500 freestyle in a school record time of 5:54.22. Co-captain Lia Potter won the 100 freestyle in 1:00.47 and took second in the 200 individual medley. The girls 200 freestyle relay—Lila Norris, Abigail Hammarlund, Jillian Pyden and Lia Potter—won in 2:15.40. The 200 medley relay—co-captain Lucy Thompson, Renee Goodale, Salyn Yancey and Ellie Hanjian—and the 400 freestyle relay—Renee Goodale, Salyn Yancey, Ellie Hanjian and Lia Potter—took second place.
“Saturday was fun,” Renee Goodale said to the Times in an email. “[I swam] events that I don’t usually swim and I’m glad I got to do them. I can only really improve from there. I’ve been [swimming] all my life, competition is just something I’ve gotten used to. It honestly just comes naturally.”
The boys team had only six swimmers, but many on the undermanned squad posted personal best times.
Paulo Pereira won the 50 freestyle in a personal best 27.76. Keith Chatinover and Ryan Laslovich each had a first and second—Chatinover won the 200 individual medley in a personal best 3:02.87 and Laslovich won the 500 freestyle in a personal best 6:57.50. Mr. Chatinover got second in the 500 freestyle and Mr. Laslovich took second in the 100 butterfly.
The boys won both freestyle relays.
Cody Metell, Paulo Pereira, Coltrane Leport and Greg Clark won the 200 freestyle and Ryan Laslovich, Keith Chatinover, Paulo Pereira and Cody Metell won the 400 freestyle.
The swimmers will travel to Nantucket on Monday for the rescheduled Cape Cod Classic. The Vineyarders return home for meets on Tuesday against Durfee and Wednesday against Bishop Stang.
