Vineyard swimmers set personal bests in Cape Cod Classic
Renee Goodale qualifies for state championships with two second place finishes.
On Monday, the Martha’s Vineyard High School girls and boys swim teams traveled to Nantucket for the 11th annual Cape Cod Classic. Host Nantucket won both the boys and girls competitions. The Vineyard girls finished 4th out of 5 teams, while the boys finished 5th.
Girls co-captain Lia Potter won the 100 yard butterfly in 1:05.87, her best time of the year. She also placed 5th in the 50 yard freestyle. Co-captain Renee Goodale had two second place finishes, including a personal best 1:13.18 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her 2:25.38 time in the 200 yard individual medley was her best of the season. Both times qualified her for the state championships, which will be held at Boston University on the weekend of February 18.
Lucy Thompson had a personal best in the 100 yard backstroke (1:25.32) as did Raven McCormack in the 100 breaststroke (1:52.14).
The girls teams finished with the following scores: Nantucket 136, Barnstable 76, Nauset 69, Martha’s Vineyard 21 and Sandwich 13.
Co-captain Harrison Dorr was the only boy with a top three finish—he took 3rd place in the 200 yard freestyle with a season best time of 2:04.23. He followed that up with 4th place in the 100 yard freestyle in a personal best time of 56.16. Ryan Laslovich took 6th in the 500 yard freestyle. Keith Chatinover had a personal best in the 500 yard freestyle and in the 100 yard breaststroke. Coltrane Leport also had a personal best 1:11.88 in the 100 yard freestyle.
The boys teams finished with the following scores: Nantucket 169.5, Sandwich 63, Nauset 49, Barnstable 37.5 and Martha’s Vineyard 10.
The swimmers busy week continues with home meets on Tuesday against Durfee and Wednesday against Bishop Stang.
