Attic dreams
By Jo Scotford Rice
I long for the attics in my dreams,
the ones above the stairs,
to the right
and up through the trapdoor
in the ceiling of the closet
where all of Aunt Edith’s dresses are
and all of her shoes,
the dolls I gave and threw away,
and all of my toys —
each one preserved
for me
to come back again
and be the little girls
who dreamed there.
Jo Scotford Rice moved to Martha’s Vineyard with her family during the winter of 1965. A loyal contributor to Poets Corner, she died in December 2013.
