At 7:30 this Thursday evening, March 9, see “The Powder and the Glory” at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. This is the story of two women entrepreneurs in America, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. One hundred years ago they came to America, and starting with nothing, created today’s $150 billion global beauty industry.

Many of us can always use a little help. The healing Order of St. Luke meets Saturday, March 11, at 10:30 am at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Donald Parker is director of the International Order of St. Luke, a worldwide healing fellowship. This Saturday he will speak about the healing of body, soul, and spirit, and will share healing prayers. Visitors are invited to participate. The Rev. Parker serves as priest associate of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Greenville, R.I., and pastor of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Putnam, Conn. He mentioned that he also finds time to play the accordion and to play with his electric trains.
You’d think it was summer with so many unusual events this weekend. Don’t forget the St. Patrick’s Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner with Chef Roger Spinney at the First Baptist Church parish hall. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation presents a virtual guided walk of Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary on Saturday, March 11, at 2 pm at the Oak Bluffs library. This is free, and perfect for people who’d like an armchair tour of this beautiful part of our Island.
Want something different? The Aquinnah Cultural Center offers dinner with venison stew, shellfish, turkey sopaheek, and Indian dumplings on Saturday, March 11, at 3 pm at the Aquinnah Town Hall. Our Vineyard Haven library has changed story times for small children. They used to be on Tuesday mornings. Now Tales for Tots, best for ages 3 and up, is on Tuesday at 10:30 am. Wednesday morning at 10:30 is Wee Ones, stories and music for age 3 and under. Both programs are presented by children’s librarian Libby Mueller, who joined the Vineyard Haven library staff in November.
Art in the Stacks at our library this month features watercolor paintings by Lynn Hoeft. Her work also includes shells and beach stones. She teaches at Featherstone. Artists interested in showing their work in our library can call 508-696-4210 for more.
The Scottish Society Songsters will present a concert, “My Heart’s in the Highlands,” at the Edgartown library on Saturday, March 11, at 3 pm. It will feature songs by Scotland’s favorite poet, Robby Burns, and a new song written by Steve Ewing and set to music by Dorian Lopes. Philip Dietterich directs the Scottish songbirds for your pleasure.

On Sunday, March 12, at noon it’s opera at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society. The program is Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio.” The opera is sung in German, with subtitles in English.
