Oh, good, we have gotten more snow! I love it when winter goes on and on. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to get snow right before Easter. Even though the temperatures have been bitter and we have been getting lots of snow after a relatively mild and snow-free winter, there is much to celebrate right now: No. 1. Chilmark Chocolates reopens today. No. 2. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival starts this evening, with a screening of the documentary “Bill Nye: Science Guy” at the Chilmark Community Center at 7 pm.

There are so many amazing films that will be shown this weekend. Of special note to people from Aquinnah are two documentaries about Native Americans: “Rumble: Indians Who Rocked the World” on Saturday at 7:30 pm, and “Tribal Justice” on Sunday at 2:30 pm. There are also kids’ films and workshops all weekend long, held at Pathways Gathering Space. The entire schedule is online at tmvff.org.

At the Aquinnah library, this week Story Time is on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday, March 18, at 10:30 am. There is an Acrylic Landscape Painting Workshop for Adults on Thursday, March 16, at 5 pm. It is free and open to the public. Supplies are provided, and no experience is needed. Kids’ Craft is on Saturday, March 18, from 11 am to 3 pm. On Tuesday, March 21, the Afterschool Club is at 4 pm, and the Knitting Group meets at 5:30 pm. Supplies are provided, and no experience is necessary. Mark your calendars: On March 30 there will be an Indian Food Cooking Demonstration by Juli Vanderhoop at 5:30 at the old town hall.

Pam Glavin called me to remind people that Carl Widdis’ tree is still up at his grave. If you know of someone struggling or in need, go to Carl’s tree and say a prayer or make a promise to do them some kindness.

Diabetes and Sugars is a free 1-hour class offered by the Martha’s Vineyard Partnership for Health in partnership with ACE MV on April 5 from 3 to 4 pm at the MVRHS, Oak Bluffs. This class is an overview of natural and artificial sugars and their impact on blood sugar levels. Participants will gain important knowledge in a number of topics which will help them become more confident about managing their daily sugar intake, and in turn feel better. There was so much happening in Aquinnah last weekend. Megan Ottens-Sargent hosted an event for the ACLU to help people get more involved in what they do. Jamie Vanderhoop hosted a pop-up shop at her home, and the Aquinnah Cultural Center hosted a “Funraiser” at the Old Town Hall. Jamie’s friend, Liz Payette, brought her Lula Roe clothing inventory from Rhode Island, and many ladies came over and shopped. There was also chowder (made by Jamie’s husband, Woody) and a challah bread made by Noah Manning. Shoppers included sisters Liz Witham and Aretha Brown, Joan LeLacheur, and Theresa and June Manning. Liz said that Vineyard ladies were the most fun and efficient shoppers she had ever met. That’s right! She should see us at the On the Cliffs yearend sale.

The ACC “Funraiser” went well, with delicious food and stories from back in the day, plus music by Carole Vandal. They are hoping to hold another in May.

Happy birthday to Michael Stutz, who celebrates on March 16, and happy birthday to Amera Ignacio, who celebrates on Sunday. Speaking of Amera, she and her partner, Todd Vanderhoop, just welcomed their third son, born last Tuesday. His name is Reed, and he was 8.1 pounds and 19 inches long. Everyone is home and doing well. The new baby joins older brothers Ivan and Lyle. I’m sure they are helping their mom out with their little brother. Happy birthday to my son, Rodeo T. Purves-Langer, who turns 10 on March 16. That’s so weird, because I am definitely not 10 years older.
