Lambing season is underway. Here are some of Beetlebung Meat Farm's newest arrivals. - Valerie Sonnenthal

So that bug turned out to be the flu, which I generously gave to my husband. Then I learned Nancy Aronie was home getting over flu too. When I visited the nurse practitioner, he said it was the worst flu season he’s seen in the decade since he’s been practicing. I don’t necessarily think of this time of year as “germ season,” but washing your hands regularly is still a good precaution.

Lambing season is well under way, with many babies to see at our local farms. Beetlebung Meat Farm lost a ewe after she gave birth to two lambs. Over subsequent days the lambs were introduced to another ewe who’d had only one lamb, and with a great deal of patience and fortitude, Lindsey Scott finally got them nursing, and relieved the mother of her engorged state. Farm life is not for the faint of heart, but it does not get better than visiting newborn lambs.

By now you may have heard a piece on NPR or even read one in the Washington Post about Chilmark and Washington, D.C., cookbook author Joan Nathan’s new book, “King Solomon’s Table: A Culinary Exploration of Jewish Cooking from Around the World.” Congratulations are due for what may turn out to be her most popular book yet, with over 170 recipes to explore.
