Memorial Day did not disappoint. The weather was iffy (downright cold at times), but the population of Martha’s Vineyard swelled, not to bursting (it’s not August yet), but the Island felt quite full. The roads were crowded, droves of people were coming off the boats, and spirits were, thankfully, high. Many summer friends have come to open their homes; some are now here for the summer, and some will return in June. I bumped into Amy and John Macy, who came for the weekend and will return once Amy finishes teaching in June. Almost there, Amy; keep your head down and grade those papers.
The rain has done wonders for the greenery in Aquinnah, which always lags behind the other down-Island towns in terms of blooming. The landscape here looks lush and full. And now it is the first day of June. Lucky for us, Chilmark Chocolates reopens today. That will help us get through the rest of the season.
The Sargent Gallery is now open on weekends and by appointment. Call Megan Ottens-Sargent at 508-645-2776 to schedule an appointment. The Outermost Inn is open for dinner Thursday through Sunday; call 508-645-3511 for a reservation. The Aquinnah Shop is open weekends for breakfast and lunch. I sent friends there this weekend, and they were awestruck by the view. The Orange Peel Bakery will resume pizza night on Wednesdays from 5 to 8 pm.
At the library, this Thursday, Story Time is at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am. The Kids’ Craft is Cardboard Collage from 11 am to 3 pm and the Afterschool Club meets on Tuesday at 4 pm.
There are dance classes at the Yard every weekday morning at 9 am. There is a different style every day. You can also buy a class card for multiple classes. Go to dancetheyard.org for the full schedule. Just because it’s busy doesn’t mean we can’t spend some time dancing. Which reminds me, the Prince/David Bowie dance party is this Friday at the Yard at 8 pm.
The Aquinnah Community Preservation Committee, together with the town planning board, would like to invite everyone to a potluck gathering this coming Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Town Hall to continue discussions regarding the visioning effort for Aquinnah Circle. Emma and Addie from the Conway School will be presenting some draft proposals for everyone to review and respond to, based on the input given at the last community meeting. Please come and share your wisdom and insights as the planning process continues. Areas of focus will include traffic, parking, pathways, and circulation, as well as draft proposals for the overlook, the bathrooms, and for the Manning property.
This Sunday at 1:30 pm, the Charter School is holding its graduation, and it is the largest graduating class ever. Congratulations, one and all!
Happy birthday to Annemarie Ralph, who celebrates today. Happy birthday to two lovely ladies who both celebrate on Sunday: Leah Bassett and Emily Vanderhoop.
The next couple of weeks are the time for everyone to catch their breath and prepare for the rest of the season. If this Memorial Day was any indication, we better be prepared. Rest up and get ready.
This was updated to add the information about the visioning effort for the Aquinnah Circle.
